I love Techno
So I love techno at Flanders expo Gent, Belgium was 2 days ago and as always there were good DJ's/producers at the festival like Paul Kalkbrenner, Simian mobile disco, Dave Clarke, Adam Beyer, Carl Craig and many more.
Its the only festival in the winter that attracts me, i mean who can resist 10 hours of good music with people that love Techno :)
Anyway enjoy this mix by Simian Mobile disco

So, I decided to take a break. Might as well. So I kept away from my computer for a few weeks, still checking whether my internet was back up or not regularly. I stopped mixing, stopped producing. Instead, I started writing and reading. I even rented a few movies.
But, now the vacation is over, so let's get right to it. As soon as my internet had winds in its sails once more, I burrowed my youngest cousin's DV camera, and started working, and the results is right below:
More of that stuff is coming. Now I just have to start working on that collab again, if I just can remember that tracklist...

Jus†ice
Yo.
For today i'll post my favorite mix of all time, its by Justice. They mixed this on Pete Tong's Radio Show on BBC Radio 1. Xavier and Gaspar are master behind the decks dont think i've ever seen better DJ's. I dont think you have heard this kind of variety music wise, its all from 60s to slammin hard filter house. Its just amazing how they fit 70 tracks into a 2 hour mix. Enough said we can agree they are Gods behind the decks and have great taste in music.
Enjoy this mix.
PS. I've tried to contact Sebastian about the Collab mix, sadly he hasnt been online so you just have to wait longer sorry about that.

Studio
Two days ago (Saturday) me and Roberto started "building" our studio.
We now have a keyboard, two guitars, two PC's, two CD-players, a mixer and a amplifier.
What we need now is a chaos-pad, a microphone and a studio soundboard.
I Wanted to put up some pictures but my laptop fucked up something..
So me and Roberto had a little collab going on. He mixed songs and I added sounds with the keyboard, but unfortunately Roberto forgot to change input settings on his PC so it sounded like it was filtered through coffee or something..
So we worked on a Beat instead and it sounds pretty awesome but it's not ready yet.
Now I'm working on the lyrics for the Beat mentioned above and I've written about a third so I still got a lot to do..
We will soon have a music session again and thats probably when I'm done with my song..
see you next time.. peace out

Freestyle
Freestyle rapping is when you improvise words/rhymes as you go, like when you are listening to some instrumental beats and you just start rapping, and everything you say is improvised.
Freestyles can also be pre-written texts that isn't about any specific subject. But those are not as fun.
Some techniques and rules you should use are:
1. It does not have to make any sense.
2. It doesn't have to rhyme exactly, it just have to sound like it rhymes.
3. Think up two rhymes in your head and then just fill the gaps with words.
4. It does not always have to rhyme, just rap to the rhythm and it will sound OK.
5. Rhyme about what you see around you, about the past, about how you feel.
6. Most important rule! Don't be afraid of what people might think about you.
I will add more if I come up with something.
Here is my fifth beat, use it to practice your freestyle skills if you want

Today was a good day
Started out with some paperwork for the employment office, and when I was done, I listend to "Ice Cube - It Was a Good Day".
Then I watched some South Park episodes and got reminded that I had to clean out my garage to make room for my car, but I realized I was way too tired, so I returned to listening to music, and I got some ideas and influences from "ill bill" and "necro".
Now I'm formating my computer so I can install FLstudio 8 again, and then I can go on with producing beats.
Meanwhile, I'm playing "Star Wars: The force unleashed" on my Xbox360
Have a great day/night and... oh wait.. I almost forgot!

Making Music Like...
If you haven't already, watch this flick. It is awesome.
On a more serious note, if you ever wanted to start producing, I have a few tips:
1. Learn to love music
2. Learn to love all music
3. Learn to play an instrument, or two, or three
4. Learn music theory
5. Get a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation, like FL or Reason) and read its manual to learn to use it
6. Read this book and then some more, all while searching the internet. Seek and you shall find.
7. Practice.
Ain't going to be any easier ;P

My Setup
We can start with a picture on my DJ equipment. You can click on the pictures for higher quality and resolution.
My DJ gear contains Denon X1500S mixer and two Denon DN-S5000 cd players. This took me about 2 years to get this gear which was a pain the ass because i bought the cd players first and the mixer 1 year later. So I couldnt try the cd players until i got my mixer. I've had this set for about 2 years now.
This is the Denon DN-S5000. The one thing that makes this cd player unique is that it has alpha track which means i can play from the same cd at the same time in 2 diffrent channels. Denon are the only ones that have this function. The player also has some effects such as DRAG and ECHO, and regular stuff like loops.
Here is the Denon X1500S mixer with 4 Channels aswell as 2 microphone channels. There is also effects on this mixer such as Flanger, filters, echo and delay with various settings on each effect. X1500 mixer also has a sampler function which i'm not very familiar with i must say.
This was a bad picture from my side but hey i'm not a photographer so who cares :)
This is the whole area where i usually mix and record or just listening to music. With a Marentz amp and two Jamo D365 speakers. As you can imagine in a pretty small room is that it can be very loud music playing but that's what it's all about. You can also see my guitar and LP of Bob Dylan's Blood on track album aswell as Rolling stones which is behind the Dylan LP.
This is not a complete set, things to get next are two technics 1200's, Korg Kaoss pad and tons of LP's

MultiBand Sidechaining
Multiband Sidechaining
What is it?
Really it's a way to set up your parametric EQ in FL to allow multiple band-passed kicks to control it, using the peak controller plugin. This guide will address how to achieve just that specifically in FL8, but I am guessing that it could be done in any DAW.
To start with...
Take the kicksample and clone it 4 times, like this:
The top channel is the original, all the others are just clones. Notice I'm using the same pattern, which, ofc, should come to no surprise. (note: you don't have to use the kick, I'm just using that for explanation purposes, any element of your track can be used this way. You don't even have to use 4 of them, you can use 2, 4 or even 15 for all I care)
After you have done this, you are going to assign each of the kicks to different mixer channels, I'm going to use channel 1 for the original kick, naming it 'kick'. For the others I will use channel 2-5, naming them 'low', 'lowmid', 'himid', and 'hi'. Why I'm using those terms should become clear later. After this you add a parametric EQ to all the channels except the original ('kick'). You will only use it as a BP-filter though, so set one of the bands to Band Pass, and turn the other bands off. The band width should be set to 1.00, the tightest possible. The setup so far should look like this:
Now, add a spectroman to you original kick channel and try to work out the main freq points of the kick you are using. Just loop the sample and look at the way it uses the spectrum. The low point of the kick I am using seems to be at around 60 hz. So, I'm going to set the freq of my BP filter in the 'low' channel to 60 hz.
The kick I am using is rather monotone, and doesn't have many dips and leaps to its spectrum. So I'm going to arbitrarily set the 'lomid' to 200 hz, the 'himid' to 1200 hz and the hi to 5000. Note that these settings are individual to the kick you are using, so take care in selecting how to set the freqs.
After that, take whichever channel peaks the loudest, ignoring the original 'kick' channel, and add a compressor to it. This will almost always be your 'lo' channel. Set the threshold to 0db, the ratio to 1:1, and turn the gain until you peak at 0 db. You never want it to peak above that. Some compressors, and I am now talking mainly about the Native FL compressor, have a limiter built in and if you peak above 0 db, it will slighty mess up your sidechaing later.
Now, after you have set your 'lo', or whichever peaks the loudest to start with, to peak at 0 db, add a compressor to the other channels, again, ignoring the "kick" channel, and set them to the same excact settings. They won't peak at 0 db, because you just want them to peak relative to eachother, with the loudest peaking at 0 db.
We are starting to get somewhere. Just bare with me for a few more minutes.
You will now add a peak controller to every channel, do I need to say you should ignore the original 'kick'?. Set the base to 50%, the volume to -50%, tension to 100% and decay to 100%. Leave mute on. You can play around with these settings later. You don't have to set them all the same, but I most often do. There might be technical or musical reasons to set the 'lomid' differently than the rest ofc. But for now, use those settings for all the channels. It should look like this:
And we are getting even closer now. Add a parametric EQ to an unused mixer channel. I'm going to use channel 6 in my example. Name it "Multiband Sidechaining", or something shorter if you prefer that. Set the band to the same freqs as your kick channels, in my example it's 60, 200, 1200 and 5000. Also, you want to set the band type to "peaking". Then right-click the levelfader on your first band, which is set at 60 hz in my example, and click "link to controller..." on the pop-up menu. Use and "internal controller" and select the controller called "peak control (low) - peak". I'll give a quick explanation if you don't use the peak controller much:
"Peak Control" in the name means it is simply a Peak Controller plugin that controls that internal controller. The name in the parenthesis refers to the name of the mixer channel it occupies. And "Peak" means it is controlled by the Peak of you Peak Controller, you can use the Peak Controller as an LFO if you want to as well.
Thus link all the band levels to its appropriate controller. Also, set the band width of all your band according to how wide the band is on your original 'kick'. For example, if there is a dip in your kick at 200 hz, which there often is, set the width of your lo (say at 60 hz) and lomid (say at 300hz) so that you leave some space in the 200 hz are. Try this out by by just lowering all the levels to 50% or something and see what form they take. You want it to look roughly like the spectrometer in your 'kick' channel looks like.
And it's done. If you want any elements to be controller by your multiband sidechaining just route them to that mixer channel. The parametric EQ will shape the sound live according to what the kick sample sounds like. No need to duck the entire frequency spectrum when you only need to duck at 600 hz is there?
Here's a quick example using only native FL8 stuff:
Multiband SideChaining Test
Experiment with this please. Try using the vocal to control the melody, instead of just using the kick. Best of luck, and if you do come up with something intresting using this technique, please let me know.

My Setup
Some of my setup in all it's glory
My MIDI-controller that I use to control the first 2 decks in Traktor, together with my DJiO, and a guitar pluck (I have a guitar too :D). The DJiO I plan to upgrade to a 8in*8out soundcard.
One of my TT200's, with the shitty headphones I use to mix, and produce, and play videogames, and listen to music, and so on and so forth. I intend to upgrade the headphones soon enough. The TT's I'll probably keep a while though.
The Numark 5000FX. Channel 1 is for the Xbox, channel 2 and 3 for the TT's, channel 4 for deck A in Traktor (aswell as the main output for windows itself) and channel 5 for Deck B in traktor. When I upgrade the sound card I will be using TC vinyls to control Deck C and D in traktor. I will then route the sound to the line inputs on channel 2 and 3. Furthermore, if I ever get CDJ's, I will route the sound from Deck A and B in traktor to the phono input on channel 3 and 4, and then route the CDJs to the line input on the same channels. So, in theory, I will be able to mix 2 channels of CDs, 4 channels of mp3s, as well as 2 channels of vinyl. Mix heaven. And, least I forget, when I get a third TT, I will route it to the phono input on channel 1 on the mixer. (Yes, that mixer has a wicked amount of inputs, 18 all in all)
My second TT together with the cleaning equipment I use
My newest addition. The entier Korg Nano series. So cheap I couldn't pass it on. I've yet to acctually use them, but then I only had them for a week or so, I'll figure something out :D Although, all jokes aside, I have used them a little bit for my production. I'm only now trying to figure out how to bring out the best in them
My vinyls. 50 of them so far. Obviously most of my collection are mp3s ;P The vinyl you see first, or don't see, it being blurry and all, is Magnesia - Today. Wicked.
And that was all for me this fine hangover wednesday.
Head in the clouds
Hello
First of all let me say that we are working on our collab mix and that the mix should be done soon i hope. The collab mix will include everything from melodic techno to trance so it will be wicked :)

Crossfade Collective
Me and Sebastian decided to form a group of DJ's we were familiar with who had done some collaboration mixes together in the past, which is how this blog was created. We also have a forum where you can post your mixes or work you created aswell as other features.
We have some work in progress for our real launch which will come with a collab mix from Me, Sebastian, Chris.A and Romeo.
